Injury Management

Following the occurrence of any injury, there exits a set protocol that should be adhered to for all soft tissue and joint injuries. The protocol is aimed at the pro active relief from the initial reactions of the body to the injury, and the promotion of healing.

Pain, Heath, swelling, and inflammation are all commonly found at the site of injury during the acute phase, and it is essential to manage these to allow an efficient recovery.

For the first 48 hours, the ICER protocol should be followed;

ICE – to be applied a minimum of 3 times daily to the site of injury. Timing is dependant on location, but a maximum of 10 minute application is recommended. This time should be less in area’s of bone prominence
COMPRESSION – This will aid the reduction of swelling, as well as offering some support. It is essential that you do not sleep in any support or compression bandage.
ELEVATION – will help limit the impact of the swelling by reducing blood flow to the region.
REST – it is important not to use or overwork the joint during this phase of healing. Do not apply excessive loads or stresses to the joint. It is important to maintain mobility, but this should be done without load.

Throughout the acute phase of injury, it is important to maintain muscle function and control ( injury permitting) and joint mobility (pain dependant). Mobilize with simple range of movement exercises and some light stretches.
At any point in the acute phase you feel your condition deteriorates or your pain become un-manageable you should seek help immediately from a suitably qualified medical practitioner.
